1. Pico scope from Autonerdz
This computer-based lab scope has the ability to capture and show almost any automotive electrical signal, from the very fast to ones that only show a change over a long period of time. But you can do both, save for an extended period, and blow it up to find the tiniest glitch.
2. Streamlight LED penlight
This is used all day, every day. I've had it so long the black finish has worn off. The batteries last an incredible amount of time.
3. Shuttle desktop gaming computer
The perfect automotive technician's computer. Small (8" x 8" x 12"), it fits perfectly in a Snap-on toolbox hutch. A vast array of inputs, including serial for the Tech2. Very powerful, durable and relatively inexpensive, it runs all day, every day, and never gives a moment of trouble. We run every program we need, and also keep Internet radio on in the background.
4. Snap on MG725/MG31 impact wrenches
We are in the Rust Belt. This pair of matched impacts (1/2" and 3/8") is the most powerful I have ever used, and seem to be very durable. Comfortable to use, and very fast. Even Honda crank bolts and VW/Audi axle bolts come right out.
5. Redline Smoke Pro Total-Tech
I used to dread EVAP leak codes. Now almost all of them are quite profitable. And it also does a good job on other leaks. It is very comforting to actually see smoke leaking from an intake gasket leak before you commit to that diagnosis.
6. Steck EZ pry bar
One of the very simple, inexpensive tools that you realize you cannot do without. Dashboard panels, door panels and center consoles, all come apart easily with no damage. Well-designed. Someone thought about providing the proper angles.
7. E-Z Red computer memory saver
Simple machine that just works. Plug it into the OBD II connector, check for a green light and flip the switch. Sure beats trying to run a jumper pack across terminals under the hood.
8. Knipex 3891 Mechanic's -grabber pliers
The design engineer thought this one through. The size and angle are perfect. The round shape on the end of the needlenose would fit well on a small hose. But their real use is unlocking electrical connectors. They fit perfectly, and you can release the lock with no damage to the connectors.
9. Utopia Tools UV flashlight
This flashlight was designed to find scorpions in the dark for campers. It is a very durable aluminum UV LED flashlight, and very reasonably priced. It does a superb job finding UV dye for A/C system leaks.
10. Power probe soldering pencil
Fast, simple, and easy to use. It makes fixing wires the correct way so simple. I couldn't even imagine trying to run an extension cord under the dash and fix things the old way with an electric soldering gun.
